The bakery sector in the Netherlands and Belgium is buzzing like never before. Recent research shows that the Benelux market is one of the most dynamic and demanding bakery regions in Europe, with strong growth in both artisanal and industrial production. The Netherlands is taking the lead as a consumption and production hub, accounting for no less than 70% of the total volume in the region. Belgium, meanwhile, distinguishes itself as a value champion, with an impressive production value of 3.6 billion dollars in the period 2024–2026.
What stands out is that consumers in both countries are increasingly opting for premium, artisanal, and health‑oriented bakery products. In the Netherlands, demand for multigrain bread, whole‑grain varieties, and organic options is growing significantly, driven by a broad movement toward conscious nutrition. At the same time, we see a strong rise in luxury pastries, high‑end patisserie, and innovative cookie and biscuit categories, often featuring less sugar, more fiber, or distinctive flavor combinations.
In both the Netherlands and Belgium, decorated bread is clearly on the rise. Consumers are not only looking for taste, but also for experience: loaves with a distinctive crust, decorative scoring, seed and grain patterns, or unique shapes are becoming increasingly popular. This trend fits perfectly with the growing demand for experience, craftsmanship, and differentiation, as is also reflected in the fragmentation of the Benelux market toward value‑added and experiential products.

For bakers, this means that presentation is becoming just as important as the recipe itself. With the right machines, such as dough molding systems capable of creating precise scoring, or dosing systems for decorative toppings, bakers can scale their creativity without compromising on quality.
In both the Netherlands and Belgium, the sector is feeling the impact of rising raw material prices, sustainability requirements, and labor shortages. Especially in the Netherlands, this is leading to a strong acceleration toward automation and modern production technologies, which are essential to remain competitive in a market that places ever higher demands on product quality and efficiency.
At Kalmeijer, we see this development reflected daily in our customers’ operations. Our machines help bakers, both large and small, combine consistent quality, creative freedom, and high production reliability. From classic bread lines to specialized solutions for artisan decorated bread, we build machines that move in step with the trends of today and tomorrow.
