The Benelux is one of the most active and demanding bakery markets in Europe. There is extensive baking activity, and the Netherlands and Belgium play a key leading role in this: the majority of bread and pastry in the region is both produced and consumed here. Belgium stands out due to the higher added value of bakery products, particularly in terms of quality and specialty products.
What we clearly see in both countries is that consumers have become more conscious in their choices. There is increased demand for artisanal bread, premium products and healthier alternatives. This includes wholegrain and multigrain bread, organic products, and bread with a clear origin. In addition, interest is growing in luxury pastries, high-quality patisserie, and special cookies and biscuits—often with less sugar, more fibre, or surprising flavour combinations.
For bakers, this means: customers want to see and taste quality.
Decorated bread is clearly on the rise. Loaves with an attractive crust, distinctive scoring, seed and grain patterns, or special shapes attract attention in the shop. Consumers are not only looking for tasty bread, but also for experience and craftsmanship.
Presentation is therefore becoming just as important as the recipe itself. With the right machines, this appearance can be consistently achieved. This preserves the artisanal look while still allowing production to remain efficient and consistent.

The sector is under pressure due to rising raw material prices, stricter sustainability requirements, and a shortage of personnel. Especially in the Netherlands, we therefore see that bakers are increasingly opting for smart mechanisation in order to simply keep going by working profitably.
At Kalmeijer, we see this in practice every day. We help bakers combine consistent quality, creative freedom, and business reliability. Whether it concerns a classic bread line or a solution for artisanal decorated bread: our machines are developed from real-world practice and evolve with the trends of today and tomorrow.
