The Hague, May 2026

Kalmeijer introduces the Decoration Machine KDM. With this new machine, Kalmeijer deliberately responds to two important developments in the market:

  • the growing demand for more and richer decorated bread,
  • the increasing need among artisanal bakers for technical support to achieve consistent quality and cost efficiency.

Market demand for stronger product appeal

Consumers are increasingly choosing bread with a distinctive appearance. Think of decorations with seeds, grains, and toppings that not only add flavor but also contribute to recognizability and experience. For artisanal bakers, this means more variety and higher demands for consistency in finishing.

“Decoration is becoming less of an extra and more often an integral part of the product,” says Jan Verhaag, Managing Director at Kalmeijer. “That requires precision and repeatability, even on busy production days.”

Technical support without loss of craftsmanship

At the same time, with the KDM, Kalmeijer aims to respond to the growing need among artisanal bakeries for smart, practical support to strengthen the craft. Finding and retaining well-trained staff is becoming more difficult, while energy costs, raw material prices, and labor costs continue to rise.

“The KDM is explicitly not an automation solution that takes over manual work,” Verhaag explains. “The baker remains in control. The machine supports the decoration process and helps deliver the same high quality day after day, regardless of staffing levels or workload.”

Strategic choice for the artisanal baker

With the KDM, Kalmeijer consciously chooses a solution that fits the reality of the artisanal bakery. By supporting repetitive tasks, the machine helps reduce physical strain, limit errors, and use raw materials more efficiently.

“Cost control today is not just about purchasing, but also about predictability in the process,” says the director. “Those who have better control over decoration reduce waste and achieve a more consistent end product.”

Investing in continuity

Kalmeijer sees the KDM as part of a broader vision for the future of the craft—not by simplifying the profession, but by keeping the work feasible and attractive for both current and future generations of bakers.

“Craftsmanship requires people. But people need support to be able to produce sustainably,” says Jan Verhaag. “With the KDM, we invest in continuity, quality, and craftsmanship.”

Availability

The Decoration Machine KDM will be available from October 2026. Demonstrations and detailed product information are already available via Kalmeijer and its sales organization.
